GENE EDWARD MADDOX, 86, of North Little Rock, passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2017. He was born in Clinton, Ark., on Feb. 8, 1935, and graduated from Clinton High School in the class of 1949. In 1953, Gene moved to Little Rock and began his career as a radio technician for the Arkansas State Police, a position he held until his retirement in 1987. He considered his greatest achievement there to have been the creation of the first emergency back-up radios for State Police troop headquarters in the state. Gene was an avid sportsman, a competitive pool player, and an enthusiastic musician who played the harmonica with several local groups. More than anything, however, he was a loving husband, a proud father, and a kind and gentle man who will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lula (Lucas) Maddox, his only sister, Helen Maddox, and his only brother, William S. "Bill" Maddox. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jeanette (Crownover) Maddox, son, Steven Edward Maddox, and former daughter-in-law, Stanley Caryol Spann, all of North Little Rock. Memorial Services will be held on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at Smith North Little Rock Funeral Home, 1921 Main St., with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. and funeral at 11 a.m. A brief graveside service will then follow at 2 p.m. at the Clinton Cemetery in downtown Clinton, Ark. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a charitable donation to the Van Buren County Historical Society, P.O. Box 1023, Clinton, Ark., 72031, the Clinton Cemetery Association, or any charity of your choice. Online obituary at www.SmithFamilyCares.com.
