John Sidney Calloway Jr.

John Sidney Calloway Jr. of Hoover, Ala. passed away on July 5th, 2017 at the age of 74. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ruth and his seven children: John Sidney III, Matthew, Andrew, Rebecca and Laura Calloway, all of Hoover; Sarah Donat of Franklin, Tenn. and Mary Griffin (Bill) of Madison, Ala. He is also survived by his twin brothers: Stefan (Cathy) and Jeff (Susie) and sister, Cathy Johnson (Terry). Grandchildren: Cameron Pirkle (Lauren), Cole Donat, Kateleigh Calloway and William (Tripp) Griffin. He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and John Sidney Calloway, his brother, Michael and grandson, Casey Calloway. John was born on July 3rd, 1943 in Memphis, Tenn. His youth was forged in Holly Grove, Ark., where he excelled in athletics and leadership. He received his MBA from Louisiana Tech and then worked on his doctorate at Ole Miss. Although his career took him and his family from Ruston, La. to Oxford, Miss., West Helena, Ark., Lafayette, La., North Little Rock, Ark. and Germantown, Tenn., he spent the last 38 years in Hoover, and called it home. John owned and operated American Tire & Auto for 35 years up until his retirement in 2014. He was an avid duck and deer hunter all of his life. He also enjoyed fishing, knife building, gardening and was a voracious reader. He was a man of honor, integrity, humility, intelligence and loads of patience! His quick, dry wit provided countless adventures, stories and experiences throughout his life. John was well respected and trusted by everyone who knew him. May his memory be a blessing to all who crossed his path throughout the years. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of both the UAB Oncology & Cardiology departments. John battled cancer for three years with dignity, grace and a few choice words along the way!! A memorial service will be held on July, 22, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Bluff Park United Methodist Church in Hoover, Ala. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Memorials honoring the life of John may be directed to Bluff Park United Methodist Church or The Alabama Head Injury Foundation.
