Zwia Weiss

Zwia Weiss of Little Rock died Thursday morning. Born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1929, the young Jewish girl survived the horrors of the Holocaust. By 15, she joined the underground, smuggled weapons, and was captured. After being forced to travel with Nazi soldiers, she crossed the Alps on foot, making it to her Promised Land, Israel, to join the Haganah. In 1968, she traveled to America, met and married her husband, Louis, and landed in Little Rock. Her athletic training prepared her to teach children Physical Education, many of whom still remember her well. Zwia attended Synagogue Agudath Achim where her story is displayed in the Museum of Jewish Life. Loved by many, cherished for her stubborn determination to survive, Zwia will be sorely missed. Graveside services at Oakland Cemetery Friday at 4 p.m. www.griffinleggetthealeyroth.com.
