Joseph W. Sargent Sr., 97, of Mayflower, Ark., passed away on Friday, July 28, 2017. He was born on Nov. 1, 1919 in Port Gibson, Miss., to the late Wilburn P. Sargent and Mattie L. Martin Sargent. He was also preceded in death by a son, Joseph W. Sargent Jr.; two brothers, Clarence and Alfred Sargent. Joseph retired from the State of Louisiana Highway Department as a Highway Engineer. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Army Air Corps serving in North Africa. He was a member of Woodlands Heights Baptist Church and was a Mason for many years. He was a good Christian man who was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Julia Lois Sargent; one son, James D. Sargent (Beverly); three sisters, Katherine Taylor, Florence Reed, and Irene Treadway; daughter-in-law, Mary Francis Sargent; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6–8 p.m., Monday, July 31, 2017 at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home in Conway. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2017 at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Mayflower Cemetery in Mayflower. In lieu of flowers please donate to Arkansas Hospice.
