Mark Allen Krain of Little Rock passed away peacefully in his sleep June 7, 2017. He was born Brooklyn, NY and raised in Brooklyn and Far Rockaway. He married Doris on May 12, 1963. He has two sons, Benjamin and Lewis, and daughters-in-law Summer and Sylvia, with five grandchildren, Parker, Riley, Mira, Milo, and Brady. Mark was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, who arranged work and career to be able to spend time with his family and centered his retirement around the grandchildren. Mark earned his PhD in Sociology with a Fellowship in Gerontology from University of Minnesota. Mark was a true scholar who loved to teach, both in the classroom and sitting around the kitchen table. He taught at the University of Iowa for six years, before moving to Arkansas and teaching at UALR for 39 years, in topics ranging from gerontology, family dynamics, social policy, and social work. He was a Full Professor and retired as Professor Emeritus. He was active in the Jewish community and consulted with the social work interns on the Family Services Committee of the Jewish Federation of Arkansas and he served on the Boards of the Arkansas Gerontological Society and Presbyterian Village. Mark served in the Army Reserves for six years. He was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Dorothy Krain, and his sister Joyce Ritirato. Burial will be at Jewish Oakland Cemetery followed by a memorial service at 2:30 p.m., Friday, June 9, 2017 at Temple B'Nai Israel, 3700 N. Rodney Parham Rd., Little Rock, Ark. 72212. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shirley and Sam Strauss Memorial Social Work Endowment at the Jewish Federation of Arkansas or the Mark Krain Endowed BSW Scholarship Fund at UALR or a charity of your choice.
