Bernie Lee Cox

Bernie Lee Cox, 93, of North Little Rock, died June 27, 2017. Born November 23, 1923 in Billstown, Pike County, Arkansas, he was the son of Dewey and Elsie Copeland Cox. A veteran of World War II, he served in the United States Army from July 1943 until January 1945 and was wounded in Saipan June 29, 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He retired from the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department after 35 years of service as a purchasing officer. After retirement, he served as a Church of Christ minister in Leola, Arkansas. A very generous and giving person, he loved his family and ministering for the Church of Christ. He was an elder of Baily Street Church of Christ in Jacksonville, Arkansas from 1960-1973. A longtime member of the Lions Club, he was a member of the Toastmasters Club for over 30 years, served as Chaplain for the American Legion from 1981-1995, was commander of American Legion Post # 1 from 1979-1980, and was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans. Preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Hazel Maxine Cox; daughter, Phyllis Brooks; brothers, James, Lynn and Cohen Cox; sisters, Joy Mae Gower and Janell Park. He is survived by his daughter, Vickie Wilkerson of Little Rock; sons, Bernie Cox (Myrene) of Little Rock, Donnie Cox (Linda) of Natchitoches, La., and Rick Cox of Little Rock; brothers, Lavell Cox of Ashland, Mississippi, Larry Cox (Peggy) of Hernando, Mississippi; sister, Francine Smith of Magnolia; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 1, 2017 in the chapel of Griffin Leggett Rest Hills, 7724 Landers Road, North Little Rock, Ark. 72117 with Larry Cox officiating.
