BRECKINRIDGE CAMPBELL, 94, of Little Rock, died April 15, 2018. He was born February 1, 1924, in Little Rock to Clifton Breckinridge Campbell and Sarah Baker Campbell. He is survived by his sister, Sarah Campbell Ray of Fort Worth, Texas; a sister-in-law, Martha Campbell; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Frances Carruthers Campbell, son Breckinridge Campbell Jr., daughter Kathryn Campbell Christianson, brother Davies Baker Campbell, and his in-laws, Kate and Dr. F. Walter Carruthers. Breck attended Rightsell Grammar School, East Side Junior High School, and Little Rock Senior High School. Upon graduation, he won a scholarship to Columbia University in New York. After one year at Columbia University, he joined the U.S. Navy Air Corps, where he served two years learning to fly and training in air and sea rescue. He returned to Columbia to complete his studies. He graduated in 1948 with a BA in mathematics. While at Columbia, he helped to revive the university's Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and was president of the chapter his senior year. After college, Mr. Campbell returned to Little Rock and was employed by Dougherty Construction Company for five years. He then joined Wittenberg, Deloney and Davidson Architects as an engineer and Supervisor of construction projects. He served in this capacity for 33 years. He was highly regarded in his field and was featured in a full-page ad for the firm in Forbes Magazine. A man of many hobbies, he designed and built a workshop and a greenhouse at his home on N. Spruce Street, where he lived with his family for 58 years. He was a Life Member of the Pulaski County Master Gardeners, and a Life Member of the Arkansas Native Plant Society. He was a gifted photographer specializing in wildflowers. He occasionally gave slide shows of his photographs to garden clubs. He also had a vegetable garden at the County Farm Community Gardens for many years. An enthusiastic outdoorsman, Breck relished the opportunity to fish, hunt, and camp, particularly at his beloved Pin Oak Duck Club, where he spent many hours with family and friends. He took many hiking trips around the world with his wife, Frances, and their friends. Breck had an interest in model trains and built a model railroad in his attic. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, the Construction Committee of Associated General Contractors, The Country Club of Little Rock, and Lakeside Country Club. He was a board member of Roselawn Memorial Park and served as its president, and he was also a volunteer at the United Fund of Pulaski County. Breck was a longtime member of Second Presbyterian Church, where served as both a Deacon and an Elder, and could always be found in his customary seat on the back row. A funeral Service will be held at Second Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 with a reception following. The burial will be private at Roselawn Memorial Park earlier that day. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The Nature Conservancy of Arkansas, Second Presbyterian Church, or a charity of your choice.
