Susan Florence Spivey Freydl

Susan Florence Spivey Freydl died peacefully on Saturday, August 11, 2018, following a courageous battle with breast cancer. Her best friend and loving husband, Scott, was by her side. Susan was born October 27, 1956, in Crossett, Arkansas.nShe was the fourth child and only daughter of John William and Mary Matthews Spivey, who preceded her in death. Susan graduated from Hendrix College in 1979 and also earned a master's degree in Counseling from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. She received her license in professional counseling in 1993. She taught for many years in the public schools in Little Rock and Carlisle and for a time at the Montessori Children's Center in Little Rock before relocating to Washington, D.C. where she worked as a government relations coordinator for the Close Up Foundation, a non-profit organization. Later she worked as a guidance counselor and therapist in Virginia and Arkansas. It was during her years in Washington that she met and fell in love with Scott who was completing his law degree at American University. Following their marriage in 1990, they returned to Washington but later moved to Hope, Arkansas where Scott practiced law while Susan was an elementary school counselor. Scott and Susan also lived in Whitehall for a brief time, before settling in Little Rock in 2006. Susan continued her work as a counselor and therapist for many organizations before retiring in 2010. In addition to Scott, her husband of 28 years, and her beloved dachshunds, Greta and Inga, she is survived by her mother-in-law, Mary Freydl of Leesburg, Florida, her step-mother, Nancy Foote Spivey of Hamburg, Arkansas, her brothers and their wives, Bill and Cathy Spivey of Little Rock, Arkansas, Tom and Paulette Spivey of Paris, Arkansas, James and Katie Spivey of Phoenix, Arizona and David and Ronda Spivey of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and by her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, her step-sisters, Rachelle Foote Speegle of Shreveport, Louisiana and Stephanie Foote Johnston and her step-brother, William Foote, both of Hamburg, Arkansas. She also leaves her lifelong friend, Sharon Davis Hargis of Hamburg, Arkansas to mourn her passing. The family wishes to thank Dr. Rhonda Gentry and her staff for their loving care of Susan during her illness and are also very appreciative of the staffs at Baptist Hospital, CARTI and Arkansas Hospice. A memorial service will be conducted at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1 Covenant Drive, Little Rock, Arkansas 72211 at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 17, 2018, with Rev. Tim Reed officiating, followed by a reception at the Church. A graveside service at the Hamburg Cemetery in Hamburg, Arkansas will follow later that day at 4 p.m. with Rev. Greg Comer officiating. The family will gather for a celebration of Susan's life and reception following the graveside service in the Fellowship Hall of the First United Methodist Church in Hamburg.
