Julian Edward Scoggins

Julian Edward Scoggins died on February 11, 2018 at his home, at the age of 94. Ed was born January 5, 1924 to James Andrew and Viola McLawhorn Scoggins in Durham, North Carolina. He graduated from Tupelo High School and entered Vanderbilt University where he played football for the Commodores and was a Phi Delta Theta. His education was interrupted by WWII. Ed joined the Army, serving in Patton's 3rd Army in Europe. Following the war, Edward returned to Vanderbilt to finish his education and graduated from Vanderbilt in 1949 with a degree in Business. In 1950, Ed married Ann Terrell of Tuckerman, Arkansas. Edward was twice elected by his peers to serve on the National Advisory Council for Butler Manufacturing Company, and was honored as Builder of the Year. Edward as a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He was a member of the Newport Country Club, having served as President. He was a member, and past president of the Newport Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Edward was on the Board of Merchants and Planters Bank for over 27 years. Ed was still serving as Board Member Emeritus. In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his son, J. Terrell Scoggins. He is survived by his wife, Ann; his son, Edward A. Scoggins and wife, Mary Lynn, of West Memphis; and a daughter-in-law, Lee Scoggins of Newport. He is also survived by four beloved grandchildren, Drew Scoggins and wife, Kelly, of Houston, Texas, Tricia Overdyke and husband, Trey, of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Mary Julian Young and husband, Stephen, of Fort Smith, Arkansas, and Will Scoggins and wife, Jessica, of Newport, Arkansas; and ten great-grandchildren. Ed is also survived by his beloved nieces and nephews, William C. Hines and wife, Woo, Betty Hines Jones and husband, J.R., Edward Hines and wife, Sarah, and James Scoggins. The family would like to give a special thanks to Ed's caregivers: Wesley Tapp, Kay Cheshier, Devonte Williams, Denitra Ross, Talsisha Alcorn, and Mary Marshall. Friends may visit at the funeral home Tuesday, 5-7 p.m. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Interment will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
