Dr. Steve Grube

Dr. Steve Grube, veterinarian and retired Air Force Colonel, passed away Dec. 11, 2017 at the age of 72. He was born in Minden, Nebraska, to Albert and Laoma Grube on September 22, 1945 and grew up on the Grube farm northeast of Franklin, Neb. After grade school at a one-room Lone Star country school, he completed high school in Franklin in 1963. He went to college at the University of Nebraska for pre-veterinary studies, and to the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He also received his post-doctorate Masters of Public Health degree at the University of Michigan. After graduating from Kansas State University in 1970, he served 30 years in the Air Force, including service in the Vietnam War, and retired as a Colonel in 2000. His worldwide assignments, deployments and duties as a veterinarian, public health officer, epidemiologist, biomedical scientist, disaster preparedness officer, medical intelligence officer and many other responsibilities included Command positions at the Headquarters of four major commands… HQ Strategic Air Command, Tactical Air Command, Air Combat Command and Air Education and Training Command. Steve was Board Certified as a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (ACVPM), and he served in national offices as the Director of the Editorial Section of the ACVPM, and as the Secretary of the Veterinary Section of the American Public Health Association. With all his dedicated service, Colonel Grube received many military decorations, including the Humanitarian Service Medal and the Legion of Merit. Having been a member of the Macon Methodist Church for more than 50 years, Steve was also a member of other churches as he and his family made many moves while in the Air Force. Steve is survived by his wife, Judy of more than 41 years, daughter, Erika, son-in-law, Eric Fortson and granddaughter, Emma and grandson, Eli, who reside in Cabot, Ark. Steve is also survived by his sister, Crystal Frerichs of Bloomington, Neb., brothers; Dick who lives in Tyler, Texas, Stan, in Kearney, Neb., and Wes and Bill Grube who are in Franklin, Neb. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Albert in 1994 and Laoma in 2007. A memorial service will be at the Cabot United Methodist Church on Saturday, Jan 13, 2018 at 3 p.m. with a Celebration of Life reception following at the church. A military burial service will be conducted in Franklin, Nebraska at a later date.
