Martha (Jean) Smith Ghent, 86, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt peacefully passed away to her next life on January 7, 2018, in Plano, Texas. Preceded in death by her devoted husband, Dawen (Don) Edward Ghent, who passed away in May 2017. She is survived by son, Louis Bartlett Ghent of Dallas, daughter, Cindy Ghent Smith and adored granddaughter, Drue Ellen Smith, both of Virginia. She is also survived by her brother, Terry (Ann) Smith of Whitehall, sister-in-law, Carolyn Smith of Lockesburg, many nieces, nephews and their families, and dearest friend, Mamie Lawson of Hot Springs. Born September 6, 1931, in Oak Forest, Arkansas to the late Elizabeth Wardlaw S. Porter, she is also preceded in death by her oldest brother, Robert Louis Smith, sister, Virginia Sue Smith and step-father, Odell Porter. Living the majority of her life in Arkansas, hard times as a child during the Depression developed the strength of character and resourcefulness to guide her through life. Helping raise her baby brother in Oak Forest and Round Pond, she graduated from Forest City High School and married the love of her life at 17. She was a faithful partner in his career, caring for their young family while often relocating on a day's notice. She later began her own career after graduating from Henderson State Teacher's College, following in the footsteps of her mother and siblings, who also graduated from Henderson and devoted their lives as school educators. After a year teaching first grade in Sparkman, Arkansas, the most memorable years of her career were spent teaching fifth grade English at Camden Fairview Elementary School. She retired from Fairview after 22 dedicated years nurturing young minds to love the written word. Mrs. Ghent challenged her students to work hard and always be mindful of proper grammar, leaving a legacy for generations to come. She will lovingly be remembered for overwhelming pride in her children, granddaughter and deep devotion to family and friends. She loved music and was active in the Fairview Methodist Church choir and youth program for many years. Their homes were filled with antiques, surrounded by beautiful landscaping, and always graced with beloved pets. She had an uncanny ability to juggle all facets of life seemingly with ease, believing you should always have something to show for your day and anything can be accomplished if you just try. Her life is a testament to strength and unwavering support, and her memory will remain in the lives she touched. Graveside services to honor her life will be held Thursday, January 11 at 1:00 pm at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Alexander, Arkansas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Easter Seals Arkansas, outpatient therapy in honor of Londyn Smith (her great-niece).
