Judith Marie Smith Pannier

Judith Marie Smith Pannier of Great Falls, Virginia, passed away from pancreatic cancer on February 28, 2018. Born March 20, l947, Judy was raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, the fourth of five children of Dr. John McCollough Smith and Marie Angehr. Her siblings are Douglas B. Smith, of Little Rock, Donald A. Smith, of New York City, Sandra Detwiler of Richardson, Texas and Robin Smith of Jackson, Wyoming. Judy attended Little Rock public schools in the difficult days of school integration. Attending Austin College in Sherman, Texas, for three years, she graduated from Southern Methodist University the following year with a major in French. Professionally, after obtaining a Master's Degree in Counseling from Gallaudet College for the Deaf, she was a counselor at the Maryland School for the Deaf for 30 years. Marrying Dan Henry Lee of Dallas, Texas, she had one child, Susannah. She sub-sequently married Robert A. Pannier, and lived happily in a gracefully aging old home in Great Falls, Virginia, for 30 years. Judy had two grandchildren whom she adored, Austin and Reagen Palik, children of Craig and Susannah Palik of Reston, Virginia. Growing up Judy became a champion swimmer for the Little Rock YWCA and was inducted into the Arkansas Sports Swimming Hall of Fame in 2005. She loved her family. Some of her hobbies were reading, playing parlor games with her family, creating photo collages, and buying Honda cars. A Celebration of Life was held at the home of her daughter, Susannah, on March 4, 2018. In memory of Judy, please send contributions to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network through pancan.org.
