Dr. Edwin Collins, 94, of Springdale, Arkansas, passed away peacefully April 5, 2019 in the Hero's Haven at the VA Medical Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He was born September 19, 1925 in Denison, Texas, the son of Ora Collins and Helen Louise Brown. Edwin graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1949 with a doctorate in dentistry. He was drafted by the United States Army and served as a Captain in the Korean War both as a medical and a dental doctor from 1949 until 1953. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star, the Air Medal and the Commendation Ribbon with Metal Pendent during his tour of duty. After leaving the military service, Dr. Collins had private dental practices in Lincoln, Nebraska and in Idaho. He later returned to college life as a professor and then Dean of Dentistry at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California. He then moved to San Antonio, Texas, where he was a professor, teaching dentistry and completing dental research in Guatemala for the University of Texas. He later became the Dean of Dentistry at the University of Texas, San Antonio. Edwin was very active and involved in the churches he attended. He loved his wire hair terriers, was an avid reader, loved the outdoors and was intrigued with computers when they first came out. He was very much a family man, humble and gave to others who were not as fortunate. He is survived by his wife, Linda Cardenas Carranza of the home; three step-daughters, Rosseal King and husband Mark of Springdale, Arkansas, Susan Yount and husband Micah of Hampton, Virginia, Melissa Reynolds and husband Tim of Nob Hill, Arkansas; grandchildren; Lindsey, Noah, Danielle, Garrett, Samantha, Zachary, Tracy, Kelsey, Jessica and Jenna and nephews; Maynard Skarka and wife Lauren of Scottsdale, Arizona and Steven Turner and wife Ikuko of Accokeek, Maryland. Graveside services with military honors will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at the National Cemetery, 700 Government Avenue, Fayetteville, Arkansas 72701 with Pastor Tom Singles officiating, under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home, 3926 Willowood Avenue, Springdale, Arkansas 72762.
