Doris Lassiter, 69, of Portland, passed away Sunday, August 18, 2019, at her home surrounded by family and friends. Doris was born May 12, 1950, in Ferriday, Louisiana. She was a resident of Portland since 1980 and a former resident of Eudora. Doris was raised in Oak Grove, Louisiana, graduated from Oak Grove High School and attended Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe. Doris was a member of the Portland United Methodist Church, where she served the Lord teaching Sunday school, participating in United Methodist Women, and volunteering for any task that needed to be done. Doris loved her job at Portland Elementary, where she worked for 19 years. First and foremost, Doris was a devoted wife, mother, and friend, but her most treasured role was of a loving grandmother and great grandmother. Her favorite activity was spoiling her grandchildren, and she will be best remembered as the mother of the golden children. She is preceded in death by her parents, Walter Blair and Ruby Jean Taunton Harris. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Fletcher Vance Lassiter; two sons, William Lassiter and wife, Carla, and Robby Lassiter and his wife, Sherry, all of Portland; two sisters, Lynn White and husband, Phil, of Kilbourne, Louisiana and Glenda O'Fallon and husband, Keith, of Laneville, Texas; three brothers, Raymond Harris and wife, Cyd, of Lake Providence, Louisiana, Steve Harris and wife, Shirley, of Delhi, Louisiana, and Jeff Harris and wife, Kathy, of West Monroe, Louisiana; nine grandchildren, Kyle Lassiter, Jake Lassiter, Robert Lassiter, Zachary Lassiter, Laura Hensley Newell and her husband, Lawson, Roger Hensley, Sydney Williams, Brennan Williams and Cailin Shivers; four great-grandchildren, Landry Ann Newell, Aiden Williams, Declan Williams and Sawyer Mae Shivers and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Funeral services are 10 a.m., Wednesday at the Portland United Methodist Church with Dr. Walter Smith and Rev. Jim Faulk officiating. Burial will be in the Portland Cemetery. Pallbearers are Kyle Lassiter, Jake Lassiter, Robert Lassiter, Zachary Lassiter, Roger Hensley, and Robby Lassiter. Memorials may be made to the MD Anderson Sarcoma Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, Texas 77210-4486. Visitation is 6-8 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Jones-Hartshorn Funeral Home of Hamburg.
