Martha Robertson Carvill

MARTHA ROBERTSON CARVILL passed away August 16, 2019, at the age of 88. She was born in Wynne, Ark. on May 22, 1931, to James Robertson and Bess Shackelford Robertson. She is preceded in death by her husband, H.C. "Bo" Carvill; daughter, Ann Carvill; and her parents. She is survived by her daughter, Caroline Carvill of Terre Haute, Ind., brother, Brown Robertson (Pam) of Germantown, Tenn.; grandson, James Carvill (Angela Steele); and two great-grandsons, Christopher and Andrew Carvill all of Little Rock, Ark.; and additional family, Machel Carvill and Emily and Jimmy Porfiris of Little Rock, Ark. After living in El Paso, Texas, and Tupelo, Miss., Martha and Bo moved to Little Rock in 1963. An ordained Elder, she was very active in Second Presbyterian Church, helping found the Learning Tree in 1970 (which later became the model for Head Start), serving as a Stephen Minister, and leading and serving on numerous committees. She was elected Vice-Moderator of the Presbytery of Arkansas in 1984 and Moderator in 1986. In 1987, she was elected to a two-year term as Moderator of the Synod of the Sun. She served on the Commission on Ministry for the Presbytery of Arkansas for many years. She also served on the board of the Vera Lloyd Home. Martha was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, cousin, and friend. She collected vintage glass, loved jigsaw puzzles and British mysteries, and was a life-long Democrat. Services will be held at Second Presbyterian Church on Saturday, August 31st, at 11 a.m. Her ashes will later be buried in a private service at Cogbill Cemetery in Wynne, Ark.
