LTC JOE CHARLES HUGHES (US Army, Retired), 86, passed away Friday, November 22, 2019, in Little Rock, Ark. He was born October 9, 1933, in McCurtain, Okla., to the late William David Hughes and Ima Maretta Deets Hughes. After graduating from Henderson State Teacher's College in 1955, he enlisted in the US Army. He served in Korea, as well as Texas, Washington, Germany, and Panama, ending his twenty-year career in Maryland. He cheered for the "hogs" no matter where stationed. After moving back to his beloved home state of Arkansas with his family, he held several different careers, became involved in Lakewood United Methodist Church, and volunteered his time as a Rotarian, traveling extensively and serving as District Governor in 1998. Joe was a man of strong character. He was thoughtful, generous, kind, honest, humble, funny, and loving. He loved all people, but he especially treasured his family. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 65 years, Martha Wincie Hughes, and his three Army brats, daughter Jo Carol Ciborowski (husband Phil) of Colorado Springs, Colo., son Dave Hughes (wife Rebecca), and daughter Lea Ann Hughes both of Maumelle, Ark. He is also survived by his favorite and only sibling, brother David Hughes (wife Robin). He was a wonderful grandfather and will be missed by Nolen (Jennifer), Andy (Kirsten), and Aaron (Lindsey) Hughes and Delaney and Lauren (Ben) Ciborowski. Joe also loved his great-grandchildren: Asher, Kobe, Maeve, Malachi, Wyatt, and Callie with another great-grandson arriving in May. The memorial service will take place on Monday, December 2, at 10:30 a.m., at Lakewood United Methodist Church in North Little Rock. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to North Little Rock Rotary Club or the Tribute of Life Foundation at Hospice Home Care. Online guest book @ www.SmithFamilyCares.com.
