Sammie James Smith, 89, of Searcy, passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2019, at his home with his wife by his side. Sammie was born December 21, 1929 in Mt. Pisgah, the son of Elvis Claude and Lena Mable Baughn Smith. Sammie graduated from Pangburn High School in 1948. Sammie was a member of the National Guard for six years and helped with the cleanup of the Judsonia tornado in March 1952. Sammie was employed at Samuel Bingham's for over 38 years. Sammie loved his family and working outside on the farm. He was a member of Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church for over 75 years. Sammie is survived by his wife of 66 years, Winnie Haney Smith; a daughter, Pam Williams of Rose Bud; a brother, Harold T. Smith of Dallas, Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Todd Smith; a granddaughter, Heide Layne Williams Smotherman; and brother Billy E. Smith. Visitation was Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Powell Funeral Home of Searcy. Funeral services are Saturday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church building fund, or the Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, or any charity of your choice. www.powellfuneralhome.net.
