Joan Winthrop Reed, of Fayetteville Arkansas, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2019 in Fayetteville. Joan was born in Larned, Kansas to Edward Giles and Marie Innerarity Wickwire on December 15, 1922. Joan was born a few minutes after her twin sister, Jean and joined her brother Edward Giles and sister Mary Jane. Joan is preceded in death by her husband, Bob Reed, son, David, brother, Edward Giles, sisters, Mary Jane and Jean. In the early 1940's Joan and her sister Jean worked for Lockheed Martin, an aerospace defense manufacturing company in California, building airplanes for the war effort. The twins were part of the Rosie the Riveter era. Joan moved to Fayetteville in the 1950's and worked for over 30 years at the University of Arkansas microbiology department and thoroughly enjoyed her work, professors and graduate students. After she retired she continued her avid love of the outdoors with nature walks, hiking and canoeing on the Buffalo River. Joan was member of the University Baptist Church for many years and met her husband Bob Reed at church. She was an active member of the Merry Hearts Kitchen Band and played the saw and the washboard delighting audiences at elder care homes and community centers. She is survived by her son, John, his wife Sheila, daughter-in-law Delores Wennerstrom, 5 granddaughters and 5 great grandchildren. Memorial services will be held 10:00am, Monday, January 14th at Moore's Chapel at 206 West Center Street, Fayetteville with the Pastor Gene Fulcher of First Baptist Church in Greenland officiating.
