Mabel Sloan Williams, 92, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 24, 2019. She was born on April 11, 1926 in Driftwood to the late L.C. and Hatz Sloan. After attending Strawberry Schools, she attended University of Arkansas, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She recently received a seventy-five year membership certificate. After graduating, she married John Thomas Williams Jr., and moved to Walnut Ridge, where they raised their family of four children. She was an educator in the Walnut Ridge school systems for many years until 1979 when they moved to Pine Bluff. Twenty years later they moved to Jonesboro to be closer to family. Mabel was an avid bridge player and a member of several bridge clubs in Walnut Ridge, Pine Bluff and Jonesboro. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jonesboro. Family and education were top priorities with Mabel. Upon retirement, they enjoyed traveling. She loved life and lived it to the fullest. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother, Larry Sloan and sisters, Margaret Ledbetter and Kathryn Kellow. She is survived by her four children, John Williams III of Walnut Ridge, Bill Williams (Dee Ann) of Edmond, Okla., Anne Edwards (Jerry) of Paragould and Alan Williams of Jonesboro; a sister, Genny Towner (Justin) of Germantown; a brother, Tom Sloan (Mary Evelyn) of Jonesboro; five grandchildren, Elizabeth McCaslin (Josh), Lauren McCaslin (Caleb), Clay Williams, Claire Williams and Caleb Williams; four great-grandchildren, Madison McCaslin, William McCaslin, Collins McCaslin and John Thomas McCaslin; several nieces and nephews. A celebration of Mabel's life will be held 11 a.m., Monday, January 28, 2019 at the First Presbyterian Church in Jonesboro with Rev. Matt Bussell officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. Monday until time of service at the church. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m., Monday at Lawrence Memorial Park Cemetery in Walnut Ridge.
