Mac Arthur Heird

Mac Arthur Heird, age 76, of Benton passed away on Tuesday March 12, 2019 at the V.A. Hospital in Little Rock. He was born April 26, 1942 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas to the late Elijah and Margaret Brown Heird. Following his service in the U.S. Navy, Mr. Heird worked at the Pine Bluff paper mill and then at the Arkansas Department of Health upon graduating college. While at the health department, Mac served as the Director of the WIC Program for the State of Arkansas for 17 years and retired in 2004. Mac was a talented musician and played bass in several notable rock bands throughout his life. He was a founding member of "The Chaps" who were based out of Pine Bluff during the 1960's. He also played with "The Matlock Band", "Sweet Magnolia", "Silver Heels", and Mike "Burger" Scoggins. In addition to playing bass, Mac also served as the production engineer for the bands. Over his career, Mac performed on more than 150 music recordings and played rock and roll music throughout Little Rock and surrounding areas every weekend for nearly 50 years. Mr. Heird is survived by three children; Neil Heird (Ashley) of Tampa, Florida, Noel Heird of Conway, and Hannah Hudson of Bryant; six grandchildren, Sierra Heird of St. Petersburg, Florida, Avery Heird of Tampa, Florida, James Hudson of Bryant, Kaylee Hudson of Bryant, Kasen Elijah Hudson of Bryant, and Kristoffer Hudson also of Bryant; and one brother, Toby Heird of Pawleys Island, South Carolina.
