David Campbell Johnson passed away peacefully at Butterfield Trail Village in Fayetteville, Ark. on Sunday October 27, 2019. A man of education, culture, and achievement. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Campbell Johnson was born June 9, 1928 in Wauwautosa, Wis. to Alfred and Merle Johnson. He discovered a love for music at an early age becoming proficient as pianist and organist by the time he finished high school. he obtained degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Columbia University, and was awarded the Doctor of Musical Arts from Boston University. As a conductor Campbell Johnson worked with the National Ballet of Washington, DC, the national Ballet of Canada in Toronto, Ontario, the Texas Tech Opera Theater, and the North Arkansas Symphony. During his time as a concert organist he toured Germany, England, and Scotland including a recital at St. Paul's Cathedral in London, England. He worked as a professor of music at the University of Arkansas for twenty-three years. Outside of the university he was the choir director and organist for St. Paul's Episcopal Church and later First Church of Christ, Scientist. He also privately taught organ, harp, and his great love-the bagpipes. He was proud to be one of the founding members of the Ozark Highlanders Pipe Band. He is survived by his wife Susan M. Johnson; three sons Mahlon Johnson of New York; Duncan Johnson of Fayetteville; Ian Johnson of Texas; a daughter Bonnie Johnson of Tennessee. Three grandchildren Evan, Charlotte, and Oliver. Memorial Service will be held Thursday, November 7, 2019 at 3 p.m. at St. Paul's Church in Fayetteville.
