Guy Hendrix "Buddy" Lackey, Jr. passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, November 20, in Little Rock, at the age of 93. He was born on October 8, 1926, in Mt. View, Ark., to Guy Hendrix and Frances Govan Lackey. He was raised in Mountain View. He is survived by his his sister, Carol Patterson of Little Rock; daughter, Lesa Lackey Doan of Little Rock, and her sons, Christopher Doan and Keegan Doan (Rachel); and a son, Guy Hendrix Lackey III of Osprey, Fla., and his daughters, Ashley and Katie Christine; a son, Tim Lackey, St. Louis, Mo.; daughter, Sonya Lackey, Cincinnati, Ohio; and son, Stan Lackey, Batesville, Ark. He was preceded in death by his parents, G.H. and Mary Govan Lackey; and his sisters, Maisie Manning and Jean Reynolds. Throughout his life Buddy was a leader, and his accomplishments and accolades were many. His warm, friendly smile and engaging personality meant that he never met a stranger. He had a gift for dealing with people. Buddy was devoted to his church, First United Methodist Church of Mountain View, where he served on the church board and taught Sunday school for many years. He had a fine voice and loved to sing with the church choir. Later in life, he could be counted on to spontaneously sing from memory a large repertoire of hymns. He attended the University of Arkansas, and later served as president of the Alumni Association. He was president of Sigma Chi Fraternity, remaining active in fraternity activities all his life. He was a staunch supporter of the Razorbacks. Buddy proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1944-46 and retired from the Air Force Reserve as a Major after 22 years of service. He spent many years building the Chevrolet dealership at the Lackey Motor Company on the square in Mountain View, and loved helping people buy cars and trucks. He assumed ownership of the Motor Company in 1962. The dealership was owned continuously by the Lackey family from 1925 until 1996. Buddy served as president of the Arkansas Automobile Dealers Association, and president of the National Automobile Dealers Association. He was named Time Magazine National Dealer of the Year in 1972. Buddy was a major force in establishing the Folk Center in Mountain View, helping to secure funding from Congress for development of Blanchard Springs and the Folk Center. He helped found the first day-care center in Mt. View, the Sunshine Daycare Center, and was instrumental in bringing the Blanchard Shirt factory to town. In 1992-93, he was named the Distinguished Citizen of the year by the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce. Funeral will be at the First United Methodist Church of Mt. View on Saturday at 2:00.
