Mary Carolyn Miller, age 94, formerly, of Sherwood, Ark., passed away at her residence in Springdale, Arl., Sept. 27, 2019. She was born in 1925 in Sarasota, Fla., to her late parents Hazel Darling McKune and Norman George McKenzie Corson. Carolyn grew up in Hartford, Conn., with a love of the piano and classical music. At the age of 14, she taught piano to underprivileged children. She graduated from Hartford School of Music and Newington High School in 1943. For one year she worked in the Pratt & Whitney factory which manufactured airplanes for the war effort, as an engineer's aide. She attended nursing school in Alexandria, Va., from 1945-1948. Carolyn worked part time as a registered nurse in labor and delivery, while she raised her children, and, retired from Fort Roots VA Hospital after 21 years in the VA system, with a total of 48 years in nursing, retiring at the age of 70. She worked as a public school nurse for Pulaski County, RN for the Little Rock City Heath Dept., and State Health Dept. as a Nursing TB specialist under Dr. Joe Bates and William Stead. At that time, Arkansas was ranked #1 in the US for tuberculosis treatment. In 1976 she began her career with the VA medical system in Little Rock at the VA Hospital on Roosevelt Rd on the 5N medical surgical unit for two years, subsequently the Geriatric Unit at Fort Roots in N.L.R., and finally in the Drug and Alcohol unit at Fort Roots, retiring in 1997. She was devoted employee, and, to her very last day loved nursing. Carolyn loved her family 1st and was a loving mother. She enjoyed the beauty of nature, her music and most of all her pets. Survivors include her twin daughters Cathy (Brad) Henry of Fayetteville, Ark., and Debby Smith of Maumelle, Ark., grandchildren, Cindy Smith of St. Louis Mo., Katie Smith of Maumelle, Ark., Ben Smith of Dyersburg, Tenn., Alex Hawk of Little Rock, Ark., Sam Hawk of Fayetteville, Ark., Erin Pickles of Savannah, Ga., and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Charles Norman Miller and her daughter Carol Miller.
