James L Lowry

Dr. James L. Lowry passed away on February 10, 2020 in Little Rock. James was born on December 16, 1938 in Fountain Hill, Arkansas to the late Floyd "FF" and Virgia (Brockwell) Lowry. James graduated from Fountain Hill High School in 1956, Arkansas A&M in Monticello in 1960, and University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock in 1964. He completed a one-year rotating internship at Confederate Memorial Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana before being drafted in 1965. He served two years in the United States Navy as Chief Medical Officer on the USS Mississinewa and at Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego, California. He then completed a four-year general surgery residency at Confederate Memorial Hospital. He practiced general surgery for over 30 years in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and Allen Parish, Louisiana. During his time in Louisiana, he also served as coroner for 20 years and was the physician for the Coushatta Indian Tribe. James was a member of the American Medical Society, Arkansas Medical Society, SAGES, American College of Surgeons, and American Board of Surgery. He was a member of the Arkansas Forestry Association and a certified tree farmer. James is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Suzanne Pernici Lowry; children, Caroline Lowry Winningham (Joe Don) of Conway and John Mason Lowry (Stephanie) of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Joseph, Ethan, Mason, Martha Grace, and Lauren. He is also survived by his sister, Eleanor Pauline Moore of Nashville, Tennessee. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. David Jones, Dr. Nancy Rector, Dr. Gabriel Peal, and the special nurses on ICU-South staff at Baptist Medical Center Little Rock. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 13, 2020, followed by Funeral Service at 11 a.m. at Ruggles Wilcox Funeral Home with Reverend Bill Cato officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m. at Zion Methodist Church Cemetery in Hamburg, Arkansas under the direction of Ruggles Wilcox Funeral Home.
