J.B. Brownfield, 86, of Letona, died Saturday, June 20, 2020. Born July 24, 1933, in Wheatley, Arkansas, he was the son of Johnnie and Ida Bilbo Brownfield of Hunter, Arkansas. Growing up in Hunter, he helped on the family farm until he was 17 years old, when he joined the Army and was a member of E Company, 38th Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He spent a year fighting in the Korean War and was wounded three times, receiving 3 Purple Hearts. He married Peggy Bogle on June 29, 1957. He was a member of Letona Missionary Baptist Church, where he served in many positions as well as being active in his local community. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 56 years; one sister, Frances Warr Bivins; and a grandson-in-law, Benjamin Kelley. Survivors include his daughter, Barbara Nichols, and her husband, Curt, of Letona; a son, Gary Robert of Texas; three granddaughters, Anita, Kristina Kelley of Pleasant Plains, and Mariah Kolbe-Nichols; three great-grandchildren, Roman, Cheyenne and Benjamin; three brothers, Lewis Brownfield of Washington, Jimmie Brownfield and Chris Brownfield, both of Letona; four sisters, Erma Frealy, Ruby Falconer, Ida Belle Travis and Iris Poor, all of Letona; and a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom he dearly loved. Graveside services were held Monday, June 22, 2020, at 10 a.m. at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Powell Funeral Home of Searcy.
