Searcy, AR, 1934 - 2020

Dr. Jerome Medwick Barnes, born September 19, 1934 in Dierks, Arkansas, and he died peacefully at home in Searcy, Arkansas on October 3, 2020. He was preceded in death by his father Arthur Edward Barnes and mother Burla Clara Porter Barnes, brother Ollis Edward Barnes, brother Billy Wade Barnes. His is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Barbara Yvonne Green Barnes of Searcy, AR, sister Clara Haskill of College Station, Texas, sister-in-law Edith Barnes of Searcy, son Roy Arthur Barnes (wife Barbara) of Searcy, son Dr. Jerome Randall Barnes (wife Stacy) of North Richland Hills, Texas, daughter Jennifer Barnes Moffett (husband Jeff) of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, grandchildren Kristin Nicole Edwards (husband Brandon), Kristopher James Barnes (wife Abby), Hudson Warren Barnes (wife Abby), Easton Randall Barnes, Greyson Ryne Barnes, Ella Frances Moffett, Noah Edgar Moffett, great grandchild Charlotte Kimberly Edwards, Duncan Alexander Edwards, Cecilia Carrington Edwards, and Kolton Bradley Barnes.
He grew up in Southwest Arkansas and graduated from Dequeen High School. He graduated from Harding University earning an undergraduate degree in History and a master's in education. He graduated from the University of North Texas with a doctorate in Education.
He was high school principal at Truman, Arkansas. He was elementary principal at Harding Academy of Memphis, Tennessee.
He worked 48 years at Harding University. He was Vice President of Student Services and a full professor in the School of Education. He was Director of the Educational Media Center. He was Sponsor of the Student Government, Student Association, and the Student Activities Committee. Students at the University loved Dr. Barnes, and many became extended members of his family.
After his retirement from the University he began working at Health Talents International and worked for them 15 years.
Jerome was a great servant of others. He has a deep faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He believes in one true God and the Holy Spirit. He lived out his faith in his marriage, family, and work.
Services will be conducted 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 6 at the College Church of Christ in Searcy. Visitation will be prior to services at 9:00 a.m. Interment will follow in the Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. All COVID-19 mandates will be followed and social distancing will be practiced. Arrangements entrusted to Powell Funeral Home of Searcy.
