Fayetteville, AR, 1936 - 2021

Doris Julia Hughey, age 84, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on Sunday August 22, 2021. Doris was born October 25, 1936 in Conway, Arkansas to Carl and Ola Rhea Maxey. She grew up living over, and working in, the store her family owned, her family called her "DJ." She married Isaac Jerome "Jerry" Hughey on October 2, 1960. She met Jerry while she was student teaching at Atkins High School in the City Café. Doris loved being married to Jerry, the love of her life and best friend. They were married for nearly 60 years. Jerry was an executive for Farm Credit Bank and often traveled for his job. Doris accompanied Jerry on many of his travels for work and they also traveled extensively for leisure all around the world, enjoying many adventures with a group of good friends. Jerry preceded Doris in death in 2018. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Carl Berman Maxey of Conway and her sister, Mildred Christine "Sue" Meyer of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and a niece and nephew. Doris is survived by two beloved nieces and their husbands, and two beloved nephews and their wives, as well as great nieces and nephews and even great great nieces and nephews.
Doris graduated from the Arkansas State Teachers College in Conway now the University of Central Arkansas. She received her Elementary Teaching Certificate from the University of Arkansas. She was a beloved elementary school teacher and colleague. She taught in Atkins, Arkansas; Austin, Texas; and taught in Fayetteville at Butterfield Trail Elementary schools for over 20 years. Doris was active volunteering her time and talents in the community. She was honored by the Washington Regional Hospital Auxiliary for her tireless work and leadership with the organization. She also volunteered for the V.A. Hospital and worked in the elections at Sequoyah Methodist Church. Doris was a long-time faithful member of Central United Methodist Church in Fayetteville where she volunteered and made many lifelong friends with those in her Asbury Sunday School class and other members in the church community. As a University of Arkansas Alumni, Doris was a Razorback fan. Doris and Jerry could always be seen cheering on the Baseball Razorbacks, as avid Razorback Baseball fans and members of the Swatters Club.
A funeral service celebrating the life of Doris Hughey will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday August 30, 2021, at Central United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, with the burial to follow in Fairview Memorial Gardens under the direction of Moore's Chapel. Visitation will precede the funeral beginning at 12:00 noon at Central UMC.
