Charlotte Fallis Smith passed away peacefully at home on December 3, 2021, at the age of 88. Charlotte was born on November 23, 1933, in Charlotte, Ark., where she was an All-State basketball player. This early success led to her outstanding basketball career with Beebe Junior College. Upon her graduation from Arkansas State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education, Charlotte taught elementary-age students for 23 years. Charlotte married the love of her life, Jewel Burl (J.B.) Smith on August 27, 1954, in the same house in Charlotte, Ark., where she was born. The majority of their life together was spent in the small, beautiful town of Marianna, where she was known by all as "Sweet Charlotte." After retiring from teaching, Charlotte loved assisting new homeowners through Charlotte Smith Real Estate. Charlotte was an active participant in the Lee County community. She was a dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir, served on nearly every committee, and for over 20 years chaired the United Methodist Women's group. She served as PEO Chapter AW president and was on the Committee of 100 for the Ozark Folk Center. She also chaired the Lee County American Cancer Society for many years, and even served on the state board. Not surprisingly, Charlotte was selected as Lee County Citizen of the Year. Charlotte lived to serve others with a smile. Whether she was making her famous brown rice or playing hostess for large gatherings, Charlotte was the sweetest woman in any room. She spent countless hours enjoying the outdoors at her Bear Creek Lake cabin, traveling with J.B. to many corners of the globe, cheering on the Arkansas Razorbacks, and cooking delicious meals. However, her favorite moments were spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents, Esther and Marvin Fallis; and siblings, Virginia Kosser, Charles Fallis, and Mary Helen Dobbins. Charlotte leaves to cherish her memory: her husband and partner of 68 years, J.B. Smith; sons, David (Susan) Smith of Jonesboro and Mark (Lucy) Smith of Marianna; grandchildren, Dr. Cassie (Ryan) Greenbaum of Cedar Crest, N.M., William (Courtney) Smith of Stuttgart, Sandy (Adam) Cloninger of England, Nancy Smith of Little Rock, Jay and Jerry Smith of Jonesboro, and Talmage Smith of Marianna; and great-grandchildren, Smith and Adrienne. A celebration of life will be held at the Marianna First United Methodist Church on December 7, 2021 at 1 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Marianna or The Community Foundation of Lee County.
