Alice Jeanne Osborne Black, was born to Imogen and Harry B. Osborne in Pine Bluff, Ark. After a few days, she came to Humphrey, Ark., where she remained the rest of her life. She, Donna Wessels, Ann Epperson and Irene Ellerman grew up on the same street in Humphrey and became lifelong friends. Alice, Donna and Ann lived on the same street, until Alice's death. Nancy Lockhart came to visit her grandparents in Humphrey during summers and became another lifelong friend. Alice was a graduate of Humphrey High School. She also attended Stephens College, a private women's college in Columbia, Mo., for a year. She made more lifelong friends during her time at Stephens. After her year at Stephens, Alice returned to Humphrey and married her high school sweetheart, James Edward Flynn. They were married for seven years, after which, James was tragically killed in 1968. James and Alice had two daughters, Sheri Flynn and Connie Flynn Voyles. Ten years after the death of her first husband, Alice married Jerry Black and two families became one. They were married for 32 years, until Jerry's death in 2010. Alice is survived by her two daughters; three stepsons, Allen Black, Russell Black and Jon Black; one stepdaughter, Renya Black; six grandchildren, Brittany Black, Haylee Black, Kayla King (Derek), Graham Voyles, Jackson Voyles and Mary-Katherine Voyles. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Colby and Kelsey King. Alice worked for many years as a bookkeeper for her father and worked for the Arkansas County Assessor's Office. She carried on a family tradition of serving as the first woman on the Humphrey City Council and proudly served for eight years as the first female Humphrey Mayor. During her time as mayor, Alice brought Humphrey its first Christmas Parade and resumed the tradition of the Humphrey Fall Festival. She was committed to her community and those living there. Alice was an active member of the Humphrey United Methodist Church, where she was instrumental in helping coordinate the annual community revival and Thanksgiving Interdenominational Worship Service. There will be a graveside service at 2 p.m., Saturday, at Lone Tree Cemetery chapel by Turpin Funeral Home of Stuttgart. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation to the Humphrey Methodist Church or to your local animal shelter in honor of her loyal companion Coco. Please go to www.turpin-co.com to sign the online guestbook.
