George Glenn Porter of Bentonville passed aware on September 14, 2021, at the age of 89. He was born on October 24, 1931, in Greenland, Ark., to the late Boyd L. and Zena M. Porter. George grew up in the Greenland, Westfork, and Fayetteville communities. He graduated from Fayetteville High School, then graduated from the University of Arkansas with a degree in education. Before going into education, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a part of the Signal Corp, and was deployed to West Berlin, Germany. He transitioned from the U.S. Army to the Arkansas Army National Guard, joining the 142d FA, headquartered in Fayetteville, Ark. He completed his teaching certification and began teaching history, civics, and drama, at Bentonville High School. George retired from education administration in 1985, after 27 years of service. He was not one to sit still and always had to be active, he worked for as a Technology Program Manager for NCR Corporation until 1989. He then became a familiar face to many, at the Bentonville Wal-Mart Supercenter. He worked in Lawn and Garden and Hardware department for 23 years. In 1990 and 1991, he was deployed to serve in Operation Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Desert Watch. He retired from the Arkansas Army National Guard on his 60th birthday, with a total of 35 plus years of service. George spent his free time enjoying gardening, fishing, anything related to the Razorbacks, and helping others. He was an active volunteer through many organizations, Meals on Wheels, Kiwanis Club, United Methodist Men, and Benton County Election volunteers. He met and married his wife of 55 years in 1964, the late Ann E. (Crevier) Porter, who passed in 2020. They both attended the Bentonville First United Methodist Church, where they were married. They both volunteered as ushers until 2018. His survivors include sons, Mark and Alison Porter of Bentonville, Scott and Jennifer Porter of Maumelle; grandchildren. Austin Porter of Oklahoma City, Okla., Kaden Porter of Bentonville, and Duffy Porter of Maumelle; and brother, Don Porter of Denton, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Boyd L. and Zena M. Porter of Bentonville; brothers Gene, Russell, and Phillip Porter; and sister Mary Ann Porter. Honorary pallbearers are Mark Porter, Scott Porter, Austin Porter, Kaden Porter, Don Porter, and Duffy Porter. Open visitation will be on Friday, September 24, 2021, at Callison-Lough Funeral Home, Bentonville, from 5-7 p.m. A private family graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at the Baptist Ford Cemetery in Greenland, Ark.
