Virginia "Gini" Ann DeVore Platt

DeWitt, AR, 1937 - 2022

Virginia "Gini" Ann DeVore Platt, 85, passed away on the morning of July 11 after suffering complications from a fractured hip.
Born in 1937 to Nealon James "Dick" and Jessie (Ives) DeVore, who preceded her in death, Gini was a graduate of DeWitt High School's Class of 1955. She was the first in her family to earn a bachelor's degree upon graduation from what was then known as Arkansas Agricultural and Mechanical College (now UA-Monticello). Gini was baptized at Bayou Meto United Methodist Church and was still a member until the day she passed. She served the church and community as a Sunday school teacher and lay leader, filling in for pastors when needed, until she no longer could do so.
As an educator, Gini taught French, English, and history (including Arkansas history) in schools across Arkansas and Texas while often serving as the school librarian. Though she tried to retire, she never really did, often returning to teach when asked. She ended her career after more than 10 years as the head librarian at DeWitt Public Library. Gini always had a book to read and was never far from a Scrabble game.
Gini is preceded in death by her husband Donald; and her sisters, Lois, Faye, and Ida Beth. She's survived by her brother, Nealon "Ben" DeVore of Mountain Home, Ark.; one niece; and six nephews.
A graveside service was held at DeWitt Cemetery on July 15. Memorial donations can be sent to Bayou Meto United Methodist Church at 1090 Hwy 276, Stuttgart, Ark. 72160.
