George Ernest Loss, loving husband, father, brother, uncle, "Poppy," coach, neighbor, and mentor passed away September 7, 2022, at the age of 90 from COVID. George was born in 1932 in Hartford, Arkansas, to George and Johanna Loss. He received his bachelor's degree from College of the Ozarks, where he played football all four years. He later earned a master's degree from the University of Arkansas. For a time the "winningest coach in Arkansas," Coach Loss led teams of high school football players for 39 years before retiring in 1992. George was devoted to his family. There was nothing he loved more than to be surrounded by his loved ones, playing games, talking, or watching sports. He loved all things Arkansas, especially all Arkansas sports. He loved a good story and could strike up a lively conversation with just about anyone. He was a masterful handyman who enjoyed helping neighbors and upcycling used equipment, making friends in the process. George is survived by his wife, Kathleen Ann (nee Fox), whom he married in 1958, and their four children, MaryKay (Aubrey Carlson), Karen (Chip Wood), George Jr. (Tracy Loss, nee Taggert), and Greg (Eileen Mulrenin), as well as nine grandchildren, his sister, MaryAnn, and nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Margaret, John, and Elizabeth. A rosary vigil and celebration of George's life will be held Thursday, September 15, at 6:30 p.m., at Our Lady of Holy Souls Catholic Church. A public memorial mass will be held on Friday, September 16, at 10:30 a.m., also at Holy Souls. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital or Holy Souls Catholic Church. On-line guest book: www.smithfamilycares.com.
