Sam Branscum denies it all

January 24, 2022 4 a.m.

In winter 1922, a lifelong resident of Stone County named Sam Branscum was accused of trying to kill a U.S. marshal who meant to arrest him for violating parole on federal liquor charges. Branscum was wounded and a posse burned his house down, but he escaped capture until early June. The June 6, 1922, Arkansas Democrat published this statement by Branscum in which he disputed charges made against him and told a very different version of what had unfolded when the marshal tried to arrest him.
