BA/BFA JURIED SENIOR EXHIBITION TO OPEN AT BAUM GALLERY By Miranda Grubbs CFAC Media Office The spring 2010 BA/BFA Juried Senior Exhibition opens at the University of Central Arkansas’s Baum Gallery on Thursday, April 15 and will be on display until Thursday, April 29. The opening receptions are April 15 from 4-6 p.m. and Sunday, April 18 from 2-4 p.m. at in the Baum Gallery in McCastlain Hall. Both the exhibition and receptions are free and open to the public. All students in the Department of Art must participate in a senior exhibit in order to graduate, said Dr. Jeff Young, chair of the department. Students graduating with a Bachelor of Arts can take multiple works before a panel, which consists of faculty members in the department, who then choose which works will be shown in the Baum Gallery. The exhibit will include 20 BA students with a Fine Arts emphasis displaying work, the most the university has had in a long time, Young said. The students are Robyn Blaylock, Karla Cossey of Harrison, Letitia Clark, Peggy Holder of Cabot, Sarah Holland of Conway, Jennifer Hoornstra of Mountain Home, Mary Hull of Conway, Sidney Jones of Batesville, Cameron King of Conway, Shawn Lee of Cabot, Anthony Leopard of White Hall, Grant Looney of Bald Knob, Megan McQueen of Little Rock, Bonnie Mergl of Mountain View, Zachary Neel of Malvern, Samantha Simpson of Stuttgart, Lonnie Smith of Cabot, Julie Sullivan of Cabot, Kirby Tidwell of Hot Springs and Rachel Walker of Little Rock. Sara Morgan, who is a BA Art Education emphasis student, will also be displaying work. Students graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts must submit a proposal to the entire art faculty one semester in advance and work on a body of work throughout the semester, Young said. Over the course of the semester, the students are guided by advisers who give suggestions and push the students along with their art. Five BFA Studio Art students will display their work. They are Jennifer Eakin of Little Rock and Katie Parker of Maumelle, both with a graphic design emphasis; Melissa Kordsmeier of Conway and Brandon Mathis of Conway, both with a sculpture emphasis; and Allison McElroy of Camden, who specializes in painting. BA student Shawn Lee, who will be showing a series of digitally created posters, said the experience has pushed him in new ways. “Through creating my work and preparing it for the gallery, I’ve learned that I need to get out of my comfort zone a lot more to really push myself as an artist,” Lee said. Young said the exhibition offers important benefits to graduating students. “I think it’s important for art students to have the experience of showing their work in a public venue,” Young said. “They learn about displaying their work — making the work is one process and displaying it is another. There’s also that goal of presenting their art work to a panel, where they explain the decisions they’ve made and discuss their process of working.” The senior exhibits at the end of each semester are usually well attended shows. Students’ families and friends are there at the receptions as well as art faculty and, often, faculty from other departments who have connections to the students. “An art gallery at a university is another venue for conversation and discussion about ideas,” Young said. “There are people who show their work and people who come to view it and discuss it. That is a value to a university.” Hours for the Baum Gallery are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Thursdays from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. For more information, call (501) 450-5793.
