Keely and Du

In keeping with its tradition of thought-provoking topics, the Weekend Theater's latest production addresses the polarizing subject of abortion. Jane Martin's Keely and Du opens at 7:30 p.m. today and performances continue at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and Dec. 7-8 and Dec. 14-15 at The Weekend Theater, West Seventh and Chester streets, Little Rock. Tickets are $14; $10 for students and adults 65 and over. Call (501) 374-3761 or visit the Web site www.weekendtheater.org. Ralph Hyman, the producing artistic director of The Weekend Theater, is directing Keely and Du, described in a news release as the story of Keely, played by Julie Atkins, who has become pregnant due to a rape by her abusive ex-husband, Cole (Duane Jackson). Keely decides to get an abortion, as she is working two jobs and caring for her invalid father. But when she arrives at a clinic, she is kidnapped by members of a Christian anti-abortion organization headed by Walter (Alan Douglas), a minister who intends to hold her captive for seven months until her baby is born, when she would either keep her child or let it be adopted. She is put under the care of Du (Patti German), a 60-ish former nurse, who tries to keep Keely calm as the two women develop a love/hate relationship.
