Lectures, Panels, Screenings Mark Hispanic Heritage Month LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Sept. 25, 2009) Little Rock Police Chief Stuart Thomas will participate in a panel discussion Wednesday, Sept. 30, on ways Latinos in the city can find community support. The event from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Donaghey Student Center's Leadership Lounge is part of the ongoing Hispanic Heritage Month at UALR. Lisette Yang, the Latino Victim Advocate and Outreach Coordinator for Safe Places; FBI Special Agent in Charge Thomas Browne from the Little Rock field office, and immigration lawyer and UALR alumnus Leo Monterrey will also participate to share information on how Latinos in Little Rock can find community support. Other events coming up include a lecture by Dr. Marcel Suarez-Orozco, co-founder of the Harvard Immigration Projects, on immigration and education at 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, in the DSC's Ledbetter Hall. "We are in the midst of the largest migratory wave in human history. What is the impact of globalization and immigration on businesses around the world?" he asks. "How do we educate newly arrived immigrant children?" These are some of the major questions that he will address. A distinguished voice on immigration, globalization and education, Suarez-Orozco has lectured around the world, including at the United Nations and the Vatican. He is currently the Courtney Sale Ross University Professor of Globalization and Education at New York University. From 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, in Stabler Hall Room 107, members of Councils 750 and 756 of the League of United Latin American Citizens will screen "Walkout." Edward James Olmos directs the true, but little-known walkout to protest the injustices of the public high school system in East Los Angeles. Refreshments will be served. UALR Chancellor Dr. Joel Anderson, Dr. Terry Trevino-Richard, UALR professor of sociology, El Latino editor Michel Liedermann, and a special guest from the Arkansas State Senate will discuss immigrants' access to education in a panel discussion and box lunch at noon, Thursday, Oct. 15, in the DSC Leadership Lounge.
