Thursday, February 4 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. Hiking For Nature Join Park Interpreter Courtney for a nature hike on the Kingfisher Trail. This nature adventure will be a great way to see the active wildlife along the trail, as well as near the Little Maumelle River. Meeting place: Kingfisher Trail Admission: Free 2 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Summit or Bust Meet Park Interpreter Courtney at the very top. Everybody recognizes Pinnacle Mountain in the distance, but can you recognize everything in the distance from Pinnacle? We will have a map and compass to try to figure out where everything is. Bring water, sturdy shoes, and anything else you might want. Meeting place: Pinnacle Mountain Summit Admission: Free Friday, February 5 9 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. Nature Scavenger Hunt Do you think you can find everything on our list? Bring your imagination and join Park Interpreter Courtney on the hunt. Wear shoes to walk in and bug spray. Meeting place: Picnic Area Playground Admission: Free 10 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. Wetland Bingo Wetlands contain more than just water. Join Park Interpreter Kristina for a stroll around the wetlands to see if you can complete a wetlands bingo! Meeting place: Kingfisher Trailhead Admission: Free 11 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Creatures with Creative Features Join Park Interpreter Kristina to discover animal characteristics that help them survive. We'll also use our own imaginations to create creatures with very special features! Meeting place: Picnic Area Playground Admission: Free 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. Home School Days: The Smelliest Animal Sign of All Join Park Interpreter Courtney as we talk about what comes out of the South end of a North bound animal. Even though it's kind of smelly and many people think disgusting, scat is a very important tool in studying animals. Come learn how you can identify what animal left this gift and what they have eaten lately. If you have ever wondered what all the hype was about, join us to learn the basics. Learn how to use a GPS to find a geocache. Learn about traceable items such as travel bugs and geocoins, and get interesting tips on ways to make caching more enjoyable for you and your family! Meeting place: Visitor Center Admission: Free Saturday, February 6 Feathers In Flight Weekend Get revved up for the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) with a weekend chock full of bird-themed programs at Pinnacle Mountain State Park! Learn to identify the birds in your backyard to get ready for the GBBC, make suet with your family to draw more birds, and have fun viewing birds all around the park. Learn some tips and tricks for identifying birds in the forest, hear their calls, and get some practice for next weekend's bird count while enjoying the quiet of Pinnacle Mountain State Park on a Sunday morning. Bring walking shoes, water, binoculars, and your favorite bird field guide. Join us as we explore the uses of a Dutch oven over an open fire while making hearty winter dishes such as stews and breads. A park interpreter provides tips and tricks while helping you learn to cook in your own 2-quart Dutch oven that is yours to keep! Advance payment required. See some of our owl specimens up close to view their amazing features, learn about some of the amazing adaptations they have for hunting, and some ways that having owls around helps YOU. Suet, cornmeal, and other ingredients combine to create a number of tasty recipes for a variety of Arkansas's native and migratory birds. Bring pinecones from your yard to take suet home for your birds! Meeting place: Big Maumelle Pavilion Admission: Free Sunday, February 7 11:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. Basic Bird ID Discover basic backyard bird identification with Park Interpreter Susan. She will introduce you to basic information you need to make a positive identification, some common birds seen in central Arkansas, and how to use binoculars. This program is great for all ages, and can help budding young ornithologists get their start! Bring binoculars and your favorite bird field guide. Try to guess what bird YOU have become to learn more about some of our common birds and practice using your field guide. Bring your favorite bird field guide if you have one. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Park Interpreter Susan will be guiding you through this very interactive program where we will discover why bird beaks come in so many different shapes and sizes. Meeting place: Visitor Center Admission: Free Tuesday, February 9 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. Winter Woodland Discover the fascinating features of a lowland forest on the paved, 1-mile Kingfisher Trail. Meet rivers, giant cypress trees, unique birds, animal signs and a multitude of interesting plants. Explore unique aspects of the ecology of a lowland forest with Park Interpreter Kristina. Meeting place: Kingfisher Trailhead Admission: Free 2 p.m. - 3 p.m. Fossils in the Maumelles Much of what we know of the Earth's past comes from fossilized plants and animals. Discover what fossils have been found in the Ouachita Mountains and what we have learned from them with Park Interpreter Kristina. Also, create your own fossil to take home with you.
