2010 Spring Break Programs Schedule for Petit Jean State Park

The following is the 2010 Spring Break Programs Schedule for Petit Jean State Park: Friday, March 19 3:00 pm Animal Myths: Join Park Interpreter Rachel at the Demonstration Area for a program on misconceptions about animals that we may have heard all our lives. 7:00 pm Sunset Stroll: Meet Park Interpreter BT at the Richter Memorial Overlook on Red Bluff Drive. We will take a short stroll to the CCC Overlook to watch the sunset. Bring a flashlight. Saturday, March 20 8:30 am Cedar Falls Hike: Meet Park Interpreter BT at the Breezeway of Mather Lodge to hike to the foot of Cedar Falls! The hike is a 2 mile round trip and moderately strenuous. Wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water. 11:00 am - The Eagle and the Wren: Meet Park Interpreter BT at the Mather Lodge breezeway to hear Dr. Jane Goodall’s version of this classic story. We will also do a bird walk and talk about birds of Petit Jean. 2:00 pm Vernal Equinox Stroll: Join Park Interpreter Rachel at Stout’s Point for a short walk to look for signs of spring! 7:30 pm Petit Jean Butterflies: Join Park Interpreter Rachel at the amphitheater for a visual sampling of the butterflies of Petit Jean Mountain. Sunday, March 21 9:00 am Wildflower Walk on Seven Hollows: Seven Hollows is a great place to find wildflowers! Join Park Interpreter Rachel at the Seven Hollows trailhead for this ½ mile walk into the forest. 11:00 am What’s In the Egg?: Meet Park Interpreter Rachel at the Demonstration Area for a nature guessing game for kids! 2:00 pm Pioneer Games - Fun With String: Meet Park Interpreter Rachel at the Pioneer Cabin to see how a piece of string could be a toy for pioneer children. Monday, March 22 10:00 am Buzz Buzzard: Park Interpreter Rachel will be at the Mather Lodge breezeway to read the tale of a wise “buzzard”. This story time will be followed by a “Vulture Watch”. Tuesday, March 23 10:00 am Rock House Cave Hike: Meet Park Interpreter BT at the Rock House Cave parking area for this hike to Rock House Cave. We will view ancient rock art created by Native Americans. This hike is ¼ mile long. 1:00 pm Cedar Falls Overlook Stroll: Join Park Interpreter BT at the Cedar Falls Overlook parking area for this easy ¼ mile stroll to view Cedar Falls from the overlook. 2:00 pm Rim Trail Hike: Meet Park Interpreter BT at the Rock House Cave trailhead to hike a scenic section of the Boy Scout Trail. This hike is about 1 1/2 miles long. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Wednesday, March 24 10:00 am Bear Cave Tour: Join Park Interpreter BT at the Bear Cave parking area to walk among the boulders of the Bear Cave area. This hike is approximately ¼-mile long. 2:00 pm -Petit Jean Diversity - Life in a Pine/Hardwood Woodland: Meet Park Interpreter BT at the Rock House Cave parking area where we will hike into a woodland and discover the plants and animals that make it their home. Thursday, March 25 9:00 am Cedar Creek Hike: Meet Park Interpreter BT at the Pioneer Cabin to explore the area surrounding Cedar Creek. This hike is about 1 ¼ miles long. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. 2:00 pm Petit Jean Diversity - Life on a River: Meet Park Interpreter BT at the Petit Jean Gravesite Overlook where we will look out over the Arkansas River and discover the variety of plants and animals that make it their home. Friday, March 26 10:00 am Arkansas Furbearers: Have you ever felt the fur of a beaver? Join Park Interpreter BT at the Demonstration Area to find out about the mammals of Petit Jean. 2:00 pm Petit Jean Diversity - Life on a Glade: Meet Park Interpreter BT at the Rock House Cave parking area where we will hike onto a sandstone glade and discover the plants and animals that make it their home. 8:00 pm Cherokee Stories: Join Park Interpreter Rachel at the amphitheater to hear Native American stories and find out what the “Trail of Tears” has to do with Petit Jean. Saturday, March 27 11:00 am Wildflower Hike to the Cedar Falls Overlook: Join Park Interpreter Rachel at the Mather Lodge Breezeway to make a ¼ mile hike to the Cedar Falls overlook and look for wildflowers. 2:00 pm Itty Bitty Scavenger Hunt: Join Park Interpreter Rachel at the Demonstration Area for a game in which we will search for items found in nature. 8:00 pm What on Earth?: Join Park Interpreter Rachel at the amphitheater to see if you can guess the identity of some mysterious natural objects. Sunday, March 28 9:00 am Rock House Cave and Turtle Rocks for Kids: Meet Park Interpreter Rachel at the Rock House Cave parking area for this hike over “Turtle Rocks”, down to Rock House Cave. This hike is ¼ mile long. 11:00 am Pine Cone Bird Feeders: Join Park Interpreter Rachel at the Demonstration Area to make an easy bird feeder that you can take home.
