Kingwood Neighborhood Hosts First Ever Big Block Party LITTLE ROCK, AR -- The Kingwood Neighborhood Association in Little Rock is sponsoring the first annual Kingwood Big Block Party Saturday September 17 from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. The party, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Durwood Rd between Pine Valley Rd and Hawthorne Rd. Details can be found at www.KNALR.org. The Kingwood Neighborhood Association serves most Little Rock residents who live north of Cantrell Rd between McKinley and Keightly Roads. Activities for kids of all ages include inflatable bouncy toys, face painting, bubbles, bicycle skills games, sidewalk chalk art contests, photography contests, piñatas, and interactive hoola-hoop dancing. Adults will enjoy live music provided by Justin Bank and Friends, be able to shop at vendor booths, and have an opportunity to win a new iPad 2 among other prizes. Popular local food vendors Hot Dog Mike, The Food Truck of Little Rock, and Hunka Pie will sell hot dogs, hamburgers, and sweets during the party. In addition, bottled water will be available, and families are welcome to bring coolers and picnics to the party. “We’ve been overwhelmed by the support of local sponsors and excited neighbors for a first year event like this,” said April Ambrose, coordinator for the event. Ms. Ambrose is the founder of the annual Arkansas Earth Day celebrations in central Arkansas, so she has a ready frame of reference. “For example, our live music will be powered by the sun thanks to use of solar equipment from Stellar Sun, and many of the kids’ activities are sponsored by The Heights Toy Center and Bicycle Advocacy of Central Arkansas.” A whole neighborhood party was first envisioned by past Kingwood Neighborhood Association President Gary Simmons and made a primary focus for 2011 by current president Steve Garrett. “We think Kingwood is a gem,” said Mr. Garrett. “It’s large and diverse. It’s close to great restaurants, shops, and schools. We feel a big, close-the-streets block party like this is a great way for neighbors to connect, to celebrate and create a culture for our neighborhood, and to simply have a great time.” Durwood Rd will be closed Saturday, September 17 from noon until 6:00 p.m. for the party. Bicycle parking will be provided within the blockades, and vehicle parking will primarily be along Hawthorne Rd, Blackwood Rd, and W Rd. The public is invited to follow Kingwood Big Block Party updates on the Kingwood Neighborhood Association’s web site, www.knalr.org, and through popular social media sites.
