The Lion in Winter
Center on the Square continues its Actor’s Showcase with James
Goldman’s “The Lion in Winter”
It’s Christmas, and Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine has been released from
her imprisonment to spend time at the king’s chateau in Chinon, but
all is not well. King Henry II of England has three sons by Eleanor of
Aquitaine: Richard, Geoffrey, and John. He wants the kingdom to stay
united after his death, but all three sons want to rule. Henry favors the
youngest John, while Eleanor favors the eldest, Richard. Middle son
Geoffrey hopes to play both ends against each other. As Eleanor and
Henry maneuver to come out on top, the results are a darkly comic
look at the way that political power and familial ties interact.
