The Magnolia Ball
A beautiful evening of 19th century music and dance, The Magnolia Ball will take place Saturday, July 7, 2012 from 7:00-10:00 pm in the Arlington Hotel Crystal Ballroom.
Master of Ceremonies Davis Tillman will welcome ball attendees. The evening’s fare will include live 19th century ballroom music and dancing, heavy hors d'oeuvres, and vintage cocktails. Period attire is encouraged but not required. The Magnolia Ball benefits the Hot Springs Music Festival. Availability is limited. Advance purchase tickets are $75 each and can be obtained by contacting the Festival office at (501) 623-4763.
Music Festival General Director Todd Cranson will lead a twelve piece musical ensemble, hand picked from around the country, in performances of authentic 19th century dance music. Dance calling, instruction, and historical context will be provided by Dance Mistress Deborah Hyland of St. Louis, Missouri.
Music and dance of The Magnolia Ball are but a part of a larger weekend event dubbed “A Capital Weekend.” Scheduled for July 6-8, Hot Springs National Park, the Garland County Historical Society, and the Hot Springs Music Festival have teamed up to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Hot Springs serving as the Arkansas State Capital with a number of special events and activities.
“We have chosen to present a 19th century civilian ball,” said Cranson. “The story of the Civil War in Hot Springs is primarily a story of individual people’s struggles. 150 years later a diversion like this is still a popular way to escape the troubles of life and enjoy the people around you who really matter most.”
This event is made possible in part by a grant from the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission.
