The Southern Tenant Farmers Museum, 117 Main Street, Tyronza, will host an exhibition of the work of Jonesboro artist Suzanne Churchill, beginning Saturday, August 1. The exhibition, "Revisiting the Delta's Past," will run throughout the month of August. The exhibition will feature several watercolors of historic buildings from Tyronza and other locations in the Arkansas Delta. Watercolor and acrylic landscapes of delta farm land will also be included. An opening reception with Churchill will be held Tuesday, August 4, at 7 p.m. Hours for this exhibition at the Southern Tenant Farmers Museum will be 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday-Friday, and 12 noon-3 p.m. on Saturday.
Churchill, a lifelong Jonesboro resident, earned a degree in commercial art at ASU, specializing in painting. She frequently attends watercolor and other painting workshops to learn and develop new skills and techniques. She worked for several years as a graphic artist and illustrator, then opened her own art and design studio. She has taught fashion illustration, color, and design classes in fashion merchandising school, she has worked as an architectural illustrator for an architectural design firm, and she has owned a needlework shop, where she designed cross-stitch patterns and produced handpainted needlepoint canvases. Currently, in addition to her commissioned work, Churchill teaches adult watercolor and sketching classes.
Churchill says, "Watercolor architectural portraits are my specialty. I love to paint homes and buildings. I think the places we live, work, and spend our time are a part of who we are. Working from reference photographs provided by my customers, I paint commissioned watercolors which hang in collections across the United States. Whether it is a home they grew up in, a place they spent their summer vacations or a young couple's first home, I enjoy learning the story of the home and working with my customers to create paintings that help keep their memories alive." However, Churchill's paintings aren't limited to architectural illustrations. One of her most recent projects was a mural painted this spring for Blytheville's Main Street featuring a cotton field, a train, the timber industry and the Mississippi River.
