Heifer Village Presents Discussion Course Series LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (August 25, 2009) Learn how to change the world during Heifer International's Discussion Courses held at Heifer Village, 1 World Avenue, in Little Rock, Ark. The five to seven week courses will be held one day each week beginning in September and Heifer is currently accepting registrations. These thought-provoking discussion courses will not only examine critical issues of our time, but also show you how to be part of the solutions. Tuition includes the class and study guide. Food for Life: Making the Connection between the Food We Eat and How It's Produced Sept. 8 Oct. 20 (Tuesdays: 9-10:30 a.m.) $50: Participants will learn how Heifer works both globally and domestically to support sustainable and just food systems. They will ask questions such as "Where is my food coming from?"; "What are the global implications of my food choices?" and "What are the risks and benefits associated with choices such as organic versus conventional, and local versus global?" Shaping a Sustainable Society: How Lifestyle Choices Impact Our Global Systems Sept. 8 Oct. 20 (Tuesdays: 5-7:30 p.m.) $50: Explore the meaning of sustainability and learn steps that can be taken to move toward more ecologically sustainable lifestyles, organizations, and communities. The Next Generation, Our Future: Nurturing and Caring for Our Children Sept. 20 - Nov. 1 (Sundays: 3-4 p.m.) Early registration: $30; after Monday, September 7, $40: A look at how the pervasive effects of advertising, media, and our consumer culture can influence a child's view of the world. Participants will explore ways to create meaningful family times and healthful environments for children, foster creativity and develop a child's connection to nature. Being Rooted: Knowing and Caring for the Place Where We Live October 5 November 16 (Mondays: Noon - 1:30 p.m.) Early registration: $30; after Monday, September 21, $40: What's your sense of place? How much do you know about our area's watershed, soils, climate, plants, animals, and history? Participants will develop an understanding of the meaning of a bioregionalism perspective, consider the benefits of consciously developing a closer identity with our natural surroundings and protecting the place where we live. Lead by Example: Sustainable Practices for your Business October 27 December 1 (Except November 24, Tuesdays: 7-9 a.m.): Early registration: $80; after Monday, October 12, $95: Insight into developing sustainability initiatives in your organization. Participants will see how to evaluate the current economic model, consider the case for change and examine the concept of sustainability from an organizational perspective. They will evaluate principles and frameworks for guiding a vision and identify tools and strategies for implementing an action plan. Early enrollment is encouraged as space is limited.
