“Don’t Call Me Pretty” Poster Exhibition by Internationally Acclaimed Punk Rock Artist Art Chantry to be Showcased at Southern Arkansas University during November MAGNOLIA─Internationally acclaimed Punk Rock Poster artist, Art Chantry, will have an exhibition at the Brinson Fine Arts Gallery during the entire month of November. Chantry’s historic work has been cited in texts, coffee table books and industry magazines dedicated to the arts and graphic design for the past decade. Now living in the Tacoma, Washington area, Chanty’s work includes artwork for such world famous musicians as Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Reverend Horton Heat, Tina Turner, and many more. Art historian and design critic, Steven Heller, calls Chantry a “pioneer” whose “work holds an essential place in the history of graphic design.” Inspired by the hot rod scene of California in the 1960s, Chantry’s tongue in cheek work draws its inspiration from the disparate likes of the folk hero and designer Harley Earl and Cartoonist “Big Daddy” Ed Roth. “This is no small coup to attract such a noted artist to the small community of Magnolia, Ark. and Southern Arkansas University,” said Dan May, graphic arts professor. The display will include 52 posters, both from Chantry’s past and some more recent additions to the massive catalog of work he has created. His often controversial work containing subject matter from AIDs awareness to theatre production and rock lifestyles are a style called horror vacui. Horror vacui, means the fear of empty space usually employed by low brow tabloid ads, are transformed by Chantry and parodied to create what some might call “arresting” art. Though universally acclaimed as a graphic art giant, Chantry’s work is not for the faint of heart. Please be aware that some people might find some of his material objectionable and consider this when bringing others to the exhibit. The Brinson Fine Arts Building is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday on the campus of SAU.
