The Arkansas Studies Institute Galleries at the Butler Center will present a show of new works by Sui Hoe Khoo on Friday, November 13, at its new space in downtown Little Rock. Mr. Colin Thomson, Curator of the Gallery, was pleased to say this is the first time the ASI Gallery presents a show by an Asian-American artist. Sui Hoe Khoo, a Malaysian-born resident of Jacksonville, AR and graduate of Nanyang Academy of Fine Art in Singapore, began his career by holding one-man shows since the early 60s. Apart from the many shows around Asia and other parts of the world, Khoo exhibited in Melborne, Adelaide in Australia, Honolulu, New York, Washington, DC and Houston, TX and Shanghai in China. His works were also included in group-shows touring Europe and South America. A recipient of the John D Rockefeller 3rd Fund grant in 1974, Khoo first came to New York to study contemporary art in the United States, at the same time enrolled at the Pratt Graphic Center in New York. Khoo migrated to the United States in 1982 and have since built up a strong artistic reputation. His participations at the Asian Art Now in Las Vegas Art Museum won him awards of Certificate of Merits in 2002 and 2004. His works were also included in the auction houses of the Christie’s and the Sotheby’s in Hong Kong and Singapore. After 17 years in Texas, Khoo and his wife Sue moved to Jacksonville in Arkansas and have set up his studio to work with oils on canvas. His last one-man show was held at the Taylor’s Contemporanea in Hot Spring in 2007. The Arkansas Studies Institute displayed functional and fine art objects from woodworkers of all skill levels in September and followed by ‘Main Street in Black and White’, a collection of photographs in October. Works by Sui Hoe Khoo will remain open until February 13, 2010 at 401 President Clinton Avenue, downtown Little Rock.
