Exhibit of African artifacts to open at Arts & Science Center “Expressions of African Culture,” an exhibition of artifacts from the private collection of Dana and Laurie Mitchell of Memphis, will be on display Dec. 31-April 30, 2010, at the Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas, 701 Main St., Pine Bluff. The exhibit presents a wealth of unique items, from carved wooden ceremonial masks covered in antelope skin to wrought iron money and spans in time from the 5th Century B.C. to the 20th Century A.D. The approximately 250 exhibit pieces include bronze, ivory and stone figures; heavily beaded crowns, thrones, stools and clothing; carved wooden statuary; wrought iron shrines and figures; ivory dance wands, harps and trumpets. Three regions of Africa will be featured: Sub-Saharan western Africa; Coastal West Africa and Central West Africa. The exhibit reflects the diverse cultures of these three regions and affords the viewer the rare opportunity to see and compare similar objects conceived differently by the various distinct cultures. Sponsors for the exhibit are Simmons First National Bank, Entergy, Pine Bluff Sand and Gravel, Arkansas Humanities Council, Arkansas Arts Council and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. The Arts & Science Center, located at 701 Main St. in Pine Bluff, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 1-4 p.m. Saturday and closed on Sunday.
