Gallery II – 11 January – 14 February, 2010 In Focus: Works from the UALR Permanent Collection House as Subject Matter Artists often use the same subject matter to tell very different stories. In this exhibition study six works from the UALR Permanent Collection have been grouped together because each artist used the house form in their compositional design. Viewers are invited to look for similarities and differences between the works as they study the content and meaning of each artwork. Helen Phillips, (American, b. 1938) Starting from Zero (1991), Ceramic and Mixed Media Don Van Horn, (American, b. 1952) Haves and the Have Nots, the Gap Widens… The Great American Dream, Wood Sculpture Lorre Hoffman, (American, b. 1959) Tenure Tract (1991), Wood, Paint and Casters Ginny Sims, (American, b. 1977) Safe as Houses (cir. 2006) Ceramic and Silkscreen Decals Megan Marlett Our Lady of Cul-de-Sac, Fresco Imogene Ragon, (American, 1887-1980) Haunted House, Watercolor Compare and Contrast Looking at two works by the same artist you can compare and contrast studio techniques, form, and content. Is there a consistency in the mark making in both works that easily identifies the artist’s hand or are the works different in tone? Do the two artworks focus on the same subject? Four artists are presented in this exhibition study. Each artist is represented by two works from the UALR Permanent Collection.
