Gallery III - 11 January – 28 February 2010 Make Believe by John Hartley http://www.johnhartley.net/ Artist Talk – 1pm Monday March 1, 2010 Some say there are two ways to approach image making. One is to be influenced by the surrounding environment. Another is to create primarily from an inner world without external reference. My images rely on both. My paintings combine two passions: making art and collecting -– linking the past, present, and future through inanimate objects, memories, and relationships. Figures and objects are dramatically lit, some intentionally blurred to obscure identification, yet remaining vaguely familiar. I use a variety of props for my compositions, including toys, matches, fire, trophies, and portraits of family, friends, and students. John Hartley, Painter John Hartley exhibits throughout Texas and the United States, his work has been critically received and is included in collections across the country. In 1990, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth purchased two of his monoprints for its exhibition, Forty Texas Printmakers. His exhibitions include shows at Kidder Smith Gallery in Boston and Martha's Vineyard, the Arlington Museum of Art, The Barth Galleries in Columbus, Ohio, and galleries in Fort Worth, Dallas, and Houston, Texas. September – Mid May Gallery Hours: M – F 9am – 5 pm Saturday 10am – 1pm, Sunday 2 – 5 pm Closed Saturday and University Holidays
