Bradbury Gallery hosts 2010 Delta National Small Prints Exhibition, opening Jan. 21
The Bradbury Gallery will host the 2010 Delta National Small Prints Exhibition, opening Thursday, Jan. 21, at 5 p.m. The Bradbury Gallery is located in Fowler Center, 201 Olympic Drive, Jonesboro. This intelligent and diverse exhibition is made up of masterfully crafted and visually powerful prints. A full-color catalog of the entire exhibition will be available at the opening reception. The Delta National Small Prints Exhibition will run through Sunday, Feb. 21.
Each year, hundreds of prints by artists from across the country are submitted to the Delta National Small Prints Exhibition. A nationally known expert in the field of printmaking is asked to select the exhibition and the award winners from this pool. This year, David Kiehl, curator of prints at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, served as the 2010 Delta National Small Prints Exhibition juror.
Before working at the Whitney Museum, Kiehl was associate curator of prints and illustrated books at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York, and a consultant curator for prints, drawings, and posters at the Wolfsonian Foundation in Miami Beach.
Kiehl has organized numerous exhibitions and continues to serve on the editorial board of Print Quarterly, the Board of Directors of Printed Matter, Inc., the advisory committee for the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies at Columbia University, and he served as a curatorial consultant for the initial planning for Philagrafika Print Quadrennial, in Philadelphia, Pa. , which commences in late January.
In a statement about his methodology, Kiehl says, "My strategy consists first of an overview of all the work submitted; second, concentration on the images; and finally, the delicate question-the balance between the technical aspects of creation and the visual impact of the subject. The last question is the most important, as the subject should never be subordinate to the technical process. This is the challenge facing all artists and particularly those artists making prints."
When making the selections, the only information the juror is given is the title, size, and type of the print. All decisions are made without the juror knowing the artist's name or address. Because of this, the Bradbury Gallery is pleased to announce that two ASU art faculty members, Shelley Gipson and John Salvest, and two graduates from the ASU department of art, Cara Sullivan and Sarah Sears, will be included in the exhibition.
Bradbury Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and 2-5 p.m. on Sunday. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
