BAUM GALLERY TO FEATURE SPRING SEASON OF EXHIBITIONS by Julie Storing CFAC Media Office CONWAY—The University of Central Arkansas's Baum Gallery will feature two exhibitions this spring —Tagged, Stamped and Stenciled: Guerilla Art “Goes Gallery” and Polarized Dispersions. The exhibits will run from Jan. 21-Feb. 25. Tagged, Stamped and Stenciled features three large murals celebrating graffiti art created by San Francisco artist Mark Bode and the UCA Painting Master Class. Visitors to the Gallery are encouraged to contribute their own tags, stamps and stencil patterns to the environment, using materials that are provided in another resource room. Go to (www.uca.edu/art/baum) for the most current information about additional events by UCA students who are using the exhibit environment for performances, poetry slams and gatherings “Graffiti artists are public artists and performance artists, and their art form is now being hailed as the 21st-Century avante garde,” Baum Gallery director Barbara Satterfield said. “Once viewed as renegades, graffiti artists are receiving solo shows in reputable commercial galleries on the east and west coasts — and those galleries are making money hand-over-fist.” The Baum Gallery's other exhibition, Polarized Dispersions, features multiple computer-generated video footage projected onto a suspended fabric sculpture. The exhibit is a multimedia installation created by Michael Wyshock, assistant professor of art at UCA. “[Wyshock] has provided a sophisticated contemporary component for our Spring 2010 season of exhibitions,” Satterfield said. “His environment is immersive and captivating, with a significant 'wow' factor.” The Gallery has scheduled opening receptions for the spring season from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, and from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25 in the Baum Gallery. Both receptions and exhibitions are free and open to the public. Hours for the Baum Gallery are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Thursdays from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. For more information, contact Satterfield at (501) 450-5793.
